Starting writing again

December 8th, 2009

She sat there in front of the computer, her hair was braided down her back and she was wearing a nice yellow night gown. Her fingers pushed the button for the computer to start up.

Voices from behind her broke into her thoughts. “Getting ready to meet your lover.” Kevin taunted.

“Yes, I am about to start writing.” Michelle stated through clenched teeth.

Amber piped in next. “Kevin leave her alone. I want to go to bed and I don’t mean sleep.” With a little giggle, Michelle heard Amber turn the door knob of her bedroom.

But Kevin needed to dig a little deeper. “Why don’t you go to a bar and find some ugly man that might be willing to lay you.” He chuckled at his own words. “Two dogs laying down rutting.” He made sick barking noises. Michelle heard the door close.

She let out her breath. Man, those two would never let up on her, she thought. She saw Bastian today, he is real. Now she would tell him what she thought. Now the truth would come out. She stroked the keys and place one hand on the cameo around her neck.

The smell of roses wafted into the room. Michelle felt faint, and her thoughts were only for Bastain.

He sat there on the edge of the bed right where she left him. He was looking at her sitting in the middle of the bed. “You came back so quickly this time”

“Yes, I was hoping to be here. When I come back it seemed so random, this time when I touched my cameo, I came here. How long was I gone?”

“Only for a few moments.” He leaned over to kiss her cheek. “Cameo?”

“Yes a tiny beautiful cameo. I did not want to talk to you about it because it seemed like a little thing. You talked of witch craft, well I think you might be right. I think the cameo is enchanted.” She leaned forward giving him a big hug. “It brings me here when I have it on. When it is removed I come back. So simple.”

Bastian pushed her away at arms length. “I need you to tell me everything.”

Michelle looked down at her hands. “There is not much to tell, a couple of months ago I received this box with the wrong postage date on it. The postage date was from the past and well my time is 1997, not 1897. I opened it and saw a beautiful woman etched into mother of pearl. I thought she was pretty, so I thought to write a story about her.”

Michelle looked back up into Bastain’s eyes. “I put the cameo on and started typing. It brought me to you.”

“That’s not possible.” Bastian’s eyes searched her face. Her explanation was outlandish, but her eyes told him that it was the truth. There was something else in her eyes, fear. “Are you afraid of me?”

Their only enemy was time. She wanted to tell him of what she had seen back in her time but she held back. “I don’t fear you but I am afraid this is the only time for you. You will have to live without me.”

His face dropped with disappointment. “I understand what you mean, you do have a life at another time but if you are here and the cameo brought you here then we have to follow the events.”

What a mother thinks of a daughter.

November 2nd, 2009

“I was not talking about Amber. I was talking about you.” Michelle’s mother exclaimed. “Despite everything thing that has happened to you, you still think you are a princess. You are a single parent but that has not stopped you from school. Nor has it stopped you from using people to get what you want. Look at your writing, you really think you will ever finish a book. Look at me Michelle, I gave up going to Duke University to marry your father. I had you and your sister, I sacrificed my education for raising you. You are my biggest disappointment, you encouraged your father not to fight that boys family. He wanted your son’s father to marry you but no you insisted that if he did not love you, you would not have him.”

“Mom, stop.”

“No, I will not stop. You are a whore but you live like a pampered little brat. “ Her mother took a breath as Michelle’s father drove up to the door. He was early. “Time to go, I have said what I have been wanting to say for months.”

Michelle pushed Jared out the open doors. Her father was there to take him. First he had in his hands, Michelle’s cameo. “I found this on your mother’s dresser. I know it is your so here.” He handed it to her then took Jared’s stroller. After the child was secured in his car seat and everyone was in the car her dad pulled out of the Dimond Center parking lot.

Home, Michelle now had her cameo. She knew that it must be the key for her to go into the past. She did not understand how. That is what Bastian will help her figure out.

The rest of the day went by uneventful, Michelle played with her son, talked politics with her father and waited for everybody to go to bed. When she had Jared asleep and her parents said good night she went to her computer. This was a rough day, writing was the only way she could relieve the stress.

Cute

October 27th, 2009

“Did you know that man that was looking at you?” Her mother asked as they sat down with ice cream in front of the Baskin’s Robin. They were done shopping.

This just made waiting for their ride easier.

Michelle thought she knew him but as time passed she did not think it was Bastian. “No, he was just a guy.”

“He thought you were cute.”

“Mother, no I do not think, well maybe. I thought he was cute.” Michelle felt flushed and by her mom’s next statement she knew she was.

“You should have gone up and talked to him. By the way he was staring at you, it seemed to me that he knew what you looked like under your jeans.” Her mother licked the side of her ice cream cone.

Looking out into the crowd of the mall she saw him again. Her mouth hung open. He was a real vampire. Maybe it was not him. Sometimes people were born to look like another person. It was purely coincidence. She looked back at her mother trying to ignore the man that was walking by them. “Well, mother that is just what guys do. Isn’t it?”

“Excuse me, miss. Is this your beautiful child?” Bastian said, his voice was lightly touched with a New York accent. He was still as young and as handsome as Michelle had remembered. His hair was cut a little bit shorter, in a military buzz cut style. He was wearing a leather jacket with a turtle neck shirt underneath. He worn a nice well worn pair of Levi jeans and combat boots. Michelle wanted to jump up and kiss him right there in front of her mother. She opened her mouth to speak but the words were not there.

Michelle mother was the person that responded to him. “Yes, she is my child. She is pretty but my other daughter is stunning to look at.” Her mother looked at Michelle, then she noticed where his attention really was. “That is Jared my first grand-son.”

“Thank-you, Madame.” He said dismissing Michelle’s mother. He turned and walked away. Michelle’s eyes followed him turn the corner. Michelle knew he was walking toward the Ice Skating rink. Her pulse was in her ears. It was him.

“That man was strange. Now that I think about it I am glad you did not try to meet him earlier. He is the rudest man I have ever met.”

“That was just a man wanting to ask a question. He wanted to talk to me, mother. Not about Amber. You scared him off.” Michelle stood up from the bench they were sitting at. She gripped the handle bars of the stroller walking off in the opposite direction that Bastian had gone.

“Wait,” her mother shouted after her. The larger woman caught up to her daughter. She reached out gripping Michelle’s arm to slow her down. “Your father will not be here for a half an hour. Please lets talk.”

“What is your problem mother?” Michelle kept on walking until she got to the pick up site right in front of Obrady Burger and Brew. There she stopped staring out the door for he father’s van. She wanted to go home and hide in her bedroom with her son.

Her mother was winded but she still answered Michelle’s question. “My problem is having a daughter that thinks she is better than anybody else.”

“Well Amber acts like that all the time. I’m used to it.”

Seeing Bastian at the MALL?

October 16th, 2009

The last words her mother said warmed her heart. Yes, she would be a good writer, because she had the imagination for it.  And she had a way of making it seem real, understanding each person has a differing perspective helped.  Her dad came up with Jared in his arms, “Do you want to go to the mall.”

Michelle took her son, “That sounds like a fun idea.” She went down stairs changed Jared, and left when her parents were ready to go.

She saw that Jared was safely placed in his car seat and her father was in the drivers. Michelle got in and sat next to her son in the back.

As her mother got in her father asked “which mall?” Her mother wanted to go to the Dimond Center. She wanted to go to the Disney Store to buy Jared a new video. So it was decide the Disney Store at the Dimond Center Mall, her father pulled out of the driveway. He drove down the residential streets to get to the stop light at Tudor Blvd. He made a left turn on that road. He drove down passing many businesses and construction. He drove until he reached the off ramp at the New Seward Highway. Michelle watched the snow covered mountains. She was not interested in what her parents were discussing but it was about her sister’s wedding. Her mother wanted to buy Amber’s dress, then pay for a large wedding. Her father was completely against it. He pulled off the Highway onto Dimond Blvd. In a few moments, they were stopped at the mall in front of O’Brady’s Burgers and Brew.

“I’ll pick you three up here.” Her dad said, as they unloaded everybody from the van. Michelle placed Jared in his umbrella stroller. Then rolled him out of the cold into the wide doors of the shopping mall. Her mother joined her. They both walked silently side buy side. Her mother turned to look at a little nic nac shop in the middle of the mall.

When Michelle stopped waiting for her mother, she saw him. It can not be, she thought. Her mother turned to see what Michelle was looking at. For an instant a look of recognition washed across her face. Bastain stood in the store front of Bosco’s cimic book and novelty shop. He was holding up a Dungeons and Dragons players handbook but he was staring at her. She wanted to go to him but she was with her mother. She pushed Jared’s stroller forward and did not acknowledge Bastian.

Why did she do that? He was the man for her. How would she introduce him to her mother? Yes, hello mom this is my new lover but he is very old. She smiled to herself drawing he mother attention. “Why are you smiling? Should I go into the hobby shop and buy your father the model train set he wanted?” They were far away from Bosco’s and now they were approaching the Hobby and Craft.

“Yes mother.” She blushed a deep shade of red.

A good writer

October 14th, 2009

Michelle sat in the empty chair. She stared at the computer screen. Her hands folded over her face as she started crying. He did have a right to his opinion, she thought but that made her sob harder. The tear flowed, her emotions were knotted up. But what Kevin said made them unravel. Yes, she felt like she was loosing her mind. Yes, she was writing a story that made little sense to her. She looked up wiping the tears on her sleeve. She would take a moment and read what she had written.

It was good. Her descriptions made her think she was really there. Her characters, especially Bastain seemed real. She knew they were real. She wanted to go back to him, she needed to go back to him.

Michelle turned off the monitor. Another time she would see him, she thought, maybe today, tomorrow or never. No it would not be never she knew that. Ever time she turned on her computer he would be there.

She walked back up stairs. Obviously Kevin and Amber left.  Her mother looked at Michelle, “his words hurt you.”

“Yes, but some of what he said is the truth, I really do think when I am writing that I am there.” Michelle admitted.

“And that is why you will be a good writer.”  Her mother said.

Nuts

October 12th, 2009

Amber started talking slowly, “Kevin wanted to read what you were writing, so he turned on your computer. He looked up you files but could not find your story.”

“Okay, what’s wrong with that.” Michelle got up off of her knees with a handful of porcline. She went over to the garbage can. She watched as the pieces fell to the bottom. Much like her computer. Her computer. Finally the understanding clicked, Kevin had messed with ER computer. She turned racing down the stairs. Her sister followed after her. This left their mother calling after, “Who’s going to finish cleaning up his mess?”

Both of the girls ignored her. Michelle made it to her computer in no time. Kevin was sitting in her chair staring at the screen. “I don’t like this.”

Amber who got there a second after said, “You found it.”

“Yes, I did and did you know your sister is nuts. I always thought she was a lesbian but i was wrong she is having an affair with, guess this, a vampire.” Kevin turned getting out of the chair. “Amber, she is certifiable.” He swept Amber up into his arms. “By the way there are a lot of grammar mistakes. I think you might want to rewrite everything.” He continued laughing, as her sister and he walked out of the room.

A meal

October 9th, 2009

Michelle hated the way she was talked down to. She understood more then anybody her situation, it did not have to be explained to her. And she thought that Jared’s father does hold some responsibility. He was a willing participant in the make of her wonderful son.

She sighed to herself, it was Sunday. She got out of bed went over to her dresser. Michelle dressed herself in a nice blouse and jeans. She then moved to her son’s, she picked out a nice blue long sleeved pullover and jeans. Today, what was she going to do? She did not know but she decided not to worry about what her mother said.

As she left the room she heard giggling. She smiled to her self and mounted the stairs. In the living room she saw her Dad with her son on his lap. They were playing a learning game on the computer. “Hi,” She walked over to her son. “Jared, are you having fun with grand-pa.”

He dad looked up at her. His brown eyes were full of love. “He’s fine leave us alone.”

Michelle put her hand up as if to surrender. “Okay! Okay, I can take a hint.” She lowered her hand then leaned down to kiss her son forehead. He was wiggling and giggling. He also repeat what his grand-pa said, “Leave us alone.”

Michelle smiled, she walked into the kitchen. She opened up the refrigerator to see what she could have for breakfast. The only thing that tempted her was the grapefruit. She grabbed it out went into a drawer to get a knife. She suddenly, turned her head to the sound of her sister yelling at the top of her lungs. “You didn’t!” Michelle thought her sister was on the phone so she did not pay attention to the exclamation.

Turning her attention to her grapefruit. Michelle went to cut it in half. When she was done she turn to go to the cabinet to get a bowl. “Mom is the news paper on the table.” she said, as she got the bowl down and place the grapefruit in it. Grabbing a spoon and rinsing off at the sink she still was not paying attention when her sister burst into the room.

“Michelle,” She gasped, “Kevin did not mean to. Sorry. Uhm… Kevin really only wanted…” She ran into Michelle’s back. The force of that made the bowl and spoon dropped to the floor. Many chunks of bowl spread out. Michelle automatically, dropped to her knees to start removing the broken shards of porcelain.

“Michelle, I am so sorry but you need to come down stairs. Kevin does not know if you have any back up files. He accidentally pushed some button to see what you were writing.”

The shock of being bumped in to and losing her breakfast, was wearing off when what her sister said started sinking into her mind. “What are you talking about?” Her voice was low because she did not want to lose her temper.

Advice

October 8th, 2009

Michelle had slept in late because she woke to the doorbell ringing. She got up as she heard her mother’s voice. Her mom was thanking Mrs. Gilles and closing the door. She watched from her bed, her mother turn with a pajama clad child in her arms. “I think you need to change him.” Her mother walked into her room with Jared.

Michelle sleepily reached her arms up to take her son. “I hate it when they return him in his pajamas. Mom why do they do this.” She hugged her son to her chest.

“I think,” Her mom replied as she sat down on the bed. “They want to keep what they buy for him. I know that woman goes out shopping for him a lot.”

“How do you know this?” Michelle asked as her son squirmed out of her arms.

He started shouting for ‘grand-pa’. She heard from upstairs her father calling back to her son. Michelle smiled as she watched her son run from the room. “Mom, my son really loves him.”

Her mother looking at the running child, “Yes he does.” Her mother turned back to look into Michelle’s eyes. “To answer your other question. Your dad and I have run into her at the mall several times when she has Jared.”

“Oh, well I understand why she does not want me to have any of the clothes. She thinks I would not return them. I think Jared’s thing are his things, so I do not complain when she does not return the things I buy for him.”

Her mother reached out and brushed the back of her hand on Michelle’s cheek.I know it has been difficult on you, but you brought it on your self by sleeping with her son. I love my grand-son but you are responsible for the way he is going to be brought up. Boys are not held responsible. I am sorry but that is how society works.” He mother got up off of the bed. “Life is all about choices. You can make good ones or bad but you are the only person accountable for your mistakes. I hope you can be a better mother to Jared than I was for you.” Michelle did not get a chance to respond because her mother left the room.

Off to Bed

October 7th, 2009

Michelle sat in front of her computer. The time was two in the morning. Her mother was standing next to her. “Michelle go to bed.” The cameo was dangling in her mother’s hand. “I will be keeping this until tomorrow night.” Her mother turned walking out of the down stairs living room.

Pushing away from the computer table, Michelle felt tired. Before she turned off the computer she leaned over and kissed the screen. She pushed the button to turn off the monitor. She decided to leave her computer on. She was thinking about sneaking into her parents room tomorrow to get her cameo back. She still did not understand how the cameo affected what was going on to her but now she was positive, when the cameo was removed she came back. She wanted to go back and tell Bastian about it.

A yawn escaped from her mouth. Yup, I’m tired, she thought. In the morning she will deal with everything, in the morning. Michelle walked into her bedroom plopping down on the bed. When her head hit the pillow she was fast asleep.

His story… was interrupted

October 6th, 2009

Michelle removed her hand from the post and over to his shoulder. She was feeling a little bit uncomfortable. “Its okay to stop. I really did not need to know.”

“I need to finish. I’m sorry. Maybe I am getting lost in the details.” He sighed his head lowered he started looking at his hands. “I went into the Shady Vixen for some, well, I was a young man.”

“You do not have to justify your actions to me.” Michelle smiled she moved her hand to run her fingers through his hair.

“She was standing on the far side o the room. I did not notice her at first. Until she started singing. She did not sing with the accompaniment of any instrument.” Michelle watched him close his eyes. “Her voice was like bells ringing. Her song was haunting. I turned and got my first eyeful of her. I knew then, I wanted her. I asked the bartender if she was available. I offered all the money I had but he said all she did was sing. What she did on her spare time was her own business. I laughed, I was handsome, so I figured that I had a chance.”

Bastain turned to look at Michelle. “No, you promised.”

Michelle smelled the roses. No she thought, this time she could see herself fading. She did not want to go. She wanted to hear the end of his story.
